Description

This object is a barred grand design spiral galaxy located 85 million light years away in the constellation of Libra at a declination of -1 degrees. This galaxy spans 8 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a large actual diameter of 200,000 light years. A bright 9.5 magnitude star, BD-00 2908, is superimposed over the top right of the galaxy.

Not much has been written about this beautiful and unique looking galaxy. Our apparent view is compromised a bit by our near edge-on angle. By my calculation, the galaxy is about 8 degrees from edge-on to us.

The inner region is fascinating in its complexity, with the core somewhat hidden by several dramatic dark dust lanes that spiral in to the center. See the attached Hubble image for much more core detail. I usually am jealous of the Hubble image, but in this case the Hubble’s field of view is too narrow to capture the complete wonder of this charming disk.

I love the ring around the central region. True to the grand design galaxy form, two long distinct arms extend from the ring and wrap around the disk for 360 degrees. At both the left and right ends, the arms fade significantly to form what looks like a gap at each end.

The image surrounding the galaxy has an interesting pattern. In the top half, many beautiful foreground stars appear. In the bottom half, many tiny distant faint galaxies populate the background.
